Master Navajo Weaver Roy KadyOffers Weaving Workshop, July 16-18, 2002, Diné College, Tsaile, Arizona, Navajo Nation
Master Navajo Weaver Roy Kady offers a weaving workshop for beginning to advanced learners from Tuesday, July 16 through Thursday, July 18 at Diné College in Tsaile, Arizona, Navajo Nation. Pre-registration is advised by calling 928-606-4064, or e-mailing roykady@dinewoven.com. On-site registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday in the Weaving Room on the 3rd floor of the college’s Hatahli Cultural Center. Class hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The $160 tuition includes use of a loom, additional materials are $35, and weaving tools will be available from the instructor. Mr. Kady grew up in a sheep-raising and weaving family in Manygoats Springs, near Teec Nos Pos. At the age of nine, he began receiving weaving teachings from his grandmother. When he was a young adult, his mother passed on her weaving tools and loom to him. Today, he is a widely respected artist and teacher, maintaining a flock of Navajo-Churro sheep that yields wool for his weavings and other fiber arts. The Navajo Weaving

(5) Max. participates; $ 160.00 tuition (does not include room/board) + $ 35.00 materials fee (does not include a weaving batten and comb) * there will be some supplies available for purchase, i.e.; handspun/commercial wool, battens, spindles, combs, ending tools and maybe looms. ( A loaner loom will be provided for the duration of the class, a deposit, which is fully refundable of $ 10.00 is required.)
Diné weaving is one of the preeminent artistic skills native to the Four Corners area. Participates will learn the very basics of setting up a loom, operating heddle sticks, weaving basic patterns, and the proper method for finishing a small weaving. Also traditional beliefs concerning weaving and sheep herding stories will be shared. The instructor is Master weaver and teacher Roy Kady, whose innovative textile designs and workshops are highly sought-after. He has been weaving since his mother and grandmother taught him at nine years of age.

Advanced Diné (Navajo) Weaving

In this workshop, students will need to have prior weaving experience. Students will bring a pre-warped and dressed looms, ready to weave. Diagonals, Twills, Double Weaves and other Specialty designs/techniques will be featured.
